What is Considered a Dental Emergency?

Like any emergency, dental emergencies can be scary and confusing. But don’t worry, if you or a family member is struck with a dental disaster, we’re here to help! In this blog post, we’ll explore some of the most common dental emergencies we see here at High Point Dentistry, as well as some immediate tips for what to do if you’re faced with one of them.

Lost Tooth

This is probably the most dramatic of the tooth disasters, a tooth knocked clean out of your mouth. Believe it or not, there’s a chance that we can save the tooth. Here’s what you can do to maximize that chance. Clean the tooth and area very gently, and place the tooth back in the socket, holding it there by biting down on some gauze. If that’s not possible, transport the tooth with you in some milk. If you haven’t lost a tooth, but the tooth/teeth are loose, you’ll still want to book an emergency visit.

Broken Tooth

While usually not as urgent as a lost tooth, a broken tooth also warrants a visit. Ignoring even a small chip could put you at risk for further damage, pain, and discomfort.

Swelling, Pain, Bleeding

Persistent swelling, pain, and bleeding with no known cause it definitely reasons to get to the dentist as soon as possible. While these issues can signify a number of different problems, they can be warning signs for both infection and oral cancer, two issues you do not want to ignore.
