BOTOX® comes from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In tiny doses, BOTOX temporarily weakens and paralyzes specific muscles. It can block nerve endings too. Most people think of BOTOX as a cosmetic treatment for wrinkles and creases but it also has medical uses! In a dental setting, what can BOTOX treat?
- Bruxism
- TMJ Disorder
- High Lip Line in a Gummy Smile
- Dentures Adjustment
Bruxism, which is chronic teeth grinding and clenching, usually occurs at night while you are asleep. This grinding can cause jaw pain, tooth damage, and headaches. Nightguards are a common treatment, but we may also recommend a BOTOX injection to relax your jaw muscles and reduce the impact of teeth grinding.
You have two joints on either side of your face that connect your jawbone to your skull. They are called temporomandibular joints or the TMJs. When these joints are injured, damaged, or otherwise unstable, you may experience jaw clicking, pain, difficulty opening and closing your mouth, and muscle spasms. A BOTOX injection can help ease the pain in your jaw muscles.
Do you have a prominent gum line when you smile? BOTOX can relax your lip muscles, lowering your lip line to hide more of your gums when your teeth show.
While dentures have significantly improved over the years, they can still feel uncomfortable at first. We can inject BOTOX into the muscles around the jaw to help your mouth adjust to dentures more easily. We can also use BOTOX if your dentures fit poorly due to shifting jaw and face muscles.
