Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Oral Cancer Awareness & Prevention Video

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month and we’re all about supporting the cause! At High Point Family Dentistry, we believe that preventive care is the key to maintaining a healthy smile for a lifetime. Read on to learn more about our approach to oral cancer screenings and what to expect at your routine visit!

Signs of Oral Cancer

While oral cancer may not appear the same in everyone, there are a few signs you should watch for. If you’re experiencing any of the following, please schedule an appointment with our team as quickly as possible.

  • A sore in the mouth or on the lip that doesn’t heal
  • Lumps inside of your mouth
  • Red or white patches in your mouth
  • Loose teeth in the gum line
  • Abnormal mouth pain
  • Pain when swallowing

Benefits of Early Detection

As with any form of cancer, early detection provides you with the highest chance of curing it. This is why it’s critical to always examine your mouth after thoroughly brushing and flossing at home. Recognizing changes in your oral health allows you to act promptly when you notice abnormalities. In addition to examining your mouth at home, we’ll always perform an oral cancer screening at each biannual visit.

Routine Oral Cancer Screenings

So, what can you expect during an oral cancer screening? It’s actually a very simple process. Once your hygienist has completed your professional cleaning, one of our dentists will accompany them at your dental chair. Using gloves, we’ll search for any problem areas around your teeth or gums. If we find anything concerning, we may call for further testing to examine any abnormal cells.

Is it time for your biannual exam and screening? We’d love to see you in our office! To schedule an appointment with us, please utilize our contact form or call to speak with a member of our team directly!
